Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) After purchasing a few albums tagged "baroque pop", I was struggling to accept that this is a real genre of its own, rather than a short-lived fashion from the late 60's. This album has convinced me that "baroque pop" is a valid and rightful classification of music, since there's simply no more adequate category for songs like that. This album fits perfectly on the shelf close to masterpieces like "God Only Knows", "Walk Away Renée", "I Can't Let Maggie Go", and "Excerpt From A Teenage Opera". Favorite track: Secret Movies.

Continental 05:13
Have you really learned what you know today? Do you have a sense of history? How many battles have you won? How many friends have you lost? Locked in a room full of memories Locked in a room full of ashes Fürchtest du etwas abseits deiner Welt? Stour lébst dou norh in dén scherbeun All.

Lonely Ride 04:01
Why driving so fast? Coz’ it won’t last This fun we have Is just a spark Time’s on our side The best of our lives Why would it end now? Why winning the race? It’s too much haste Just for a game Faces and names Neighbours and friends Spin in our heads We won’t remember them Is life a lonely ride? Stars will always shine If you hold the night If you get high Enough to fly Over the heights Houses and cars Endlessly rising Is life a lonely ride?

I’ve got miles to run today I’ve gotta view how things seem from afar Starting now I’ve got air to breathe today I’ve got a life to live, I’ll use it all I heard me say The lines we used to draw Are rising from the shores On this brightful day? The line I’m drawing now This is how I feel On this brightful day I’ve got tales to tell today I’ll make up the ones that you might like to hear Secretly I’ve got to start refreshed today To find out about the kicks and clicks inside How they feel The lines we used to draw Are rising from the shores On this brightful day? The line I’m drawing now This is how I feel On this brightful day This great lungful of air That now I can take On this brightful day

While I was away in the raging battlefield You were waiting for me Something I couldn’t see While I was busy braving each time a thousand fears I remembered your face Thrill of war gone astray Tell me everything, what happened all those years? Many days growing long, How come seasons went wrong? A flash in my eyes I began to realise All my life I thought I was walking through a battlefield Now that everyone’s gone Are you ready to stay? How can I explain, that it took me all these years Simply to realise One life is quite a thrill? A flash in my eyes I begin to realise

Follow me, boy There is a road Follow me, boy It's time to go Look at this magic We've built It's all yours now Look at the view we get When we stand near the edge No one can see you The echo follows your trail Look at this magic We've built It's all yours now It fades away You're the last to stay

Always 04:31
Always fighting by your side Never accepting what we have We’ve always looked For noon at two o’clocks I will never let you down No matter what the fight I’m getting lost So lift me up Repeat the words I’ve followed through the years Always dreaming of what we live for Always chasing what we dream of I will miss That feeling of being alive One day we will get too tired But we won’t need goodbyes I’m getting lost So light a flame Where is the land? I can’t see anymore

Is there anyone hoping for something to happen soon? Is there anyone daring to say life could be better than this? Is there anyone thinking it’s boring to play the game? Is there anyone starting to run 1, 2, 3 we’re already gone? Anytime is now Anywhere is here Anything is good Good enough for us Nearing way too soon Gone for good Silly dreams are Painting all the scenes Shake it off Choose the one we like Print it on your life, we were Born on yesterday The corner of our way Whisper in my ear Days are not Bright enough We’re not ready yet, no This is just your mind Playing tricks on mine We’re anytime where We should be now

Them 03:50
According to them We’re stuck in the past They’ll bring us up to date According to them We like simple things Like sentimental gaze We have been waiting for enlightenment For so long According to them We won’t feel the same They’ll reinvent ourselves According to them We need hope and faith The future is at stakes We have been waiting for enlightenment For so long now But will we fool ourselves if we trade our past? We have been waiting for enlightenment For so long now But will we fool ourselves if we trade our past?

Every time the world is too loud Where have you gone, peace of mind? Every time you're feeling a doubt Gather pieces of your mind Let me take you out for a ride? Out where the city smiles A sea of light where we can drown Forgetting the chaos around We’re walking together in silence, in silence Though all that surrounds us is violence, is violence Sometimes it’s getting so loud That you can't take it all at once The numbers and the names and the place So remember who your people are Let me take you out for a ride Out where the city smiles We'll come back on a merry go-round Another day gone safe and sound We’re walking together in silence, in silence Though all that surrounds us is violence, is violence

about

orwell Nancy, France

Orwell lead by Jérôme Didelot attracted high praise in 2009 with their first UK release ‘Le génie humain’ with glowing reviews in Mojo, The Sunday Times, and The Express to name a few. Quite an achievement for an album sung almost exclusively in French and a reflection of Didelot’s immense talent for crafting that sophisticated intellectualized pop paralleled by the likes of the High Llamas. ... more
